European Commission requests comments regarding commitments submitted by Gazprom

The European Commission invited interested parties to comment on commitments submitted by Gazprom to remove competitive concerns regarding Central and Eastern European gas markets. The commitments aim to enable cross-border gas flow at competitive prices. Gazprom is currently the dominant gas supplier in Central and Eastern Europe and the European Commission has sent a statement of objections on April 2015 alleging that Gazprom has violated EU competition rules by pursuing a strategy to partition Central and Eastern European gas markets. The European Commission is of the opinion that the commitments will remove restrictions on cross-border resale of gas, will ensure that prices in Central and Eastern Europe reflect competitive price benchmarks and that Gazprom will not be able to benefit from any advantages (it obtained thanks to its dominant position in gas supply) concerning gas infrastructure. The press release dated 13 March 2017 about the commitments is available at http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-17-555_en.htm whereas the statement by Commissioner Margrethe Vestager is available at http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_STATEMENT-17-590_en.htm
